The Greater Green Bay Blue Ribbons kicked off the 2021 season on Wednesday night with a 4-2 win over Appleton, thanks in large part, to a key two-run double off the bat of third baseman Jayden Adrians with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Legends jumped out to an early lead, plating a run in the top of the second inning, but Green Bay answered right back, with a run in their half of the frame, when first baseman Jacob Lacy singled, and would come around to score on an RBI groundout by catcher Jeremy Laffoon.
Appleton re-claimed the lead with a run in the top of the third, but the Ribbons fought back to tie the game again in the sixth, when left fielder Noah Robinson, who had singled earlier in the inning, scored on a groundout by Adrians to make it 2-2.
The score remained tied into the eighth, when Adrians stepped to the plate with two outs, and smoked a double to left, driving in Robinson and Lane Sobieski to put Green Bay on top, 4-2.
Bret Whiffen started the game for the Blue Ribbons and went four innings, allowing just one earned run. Liam Jones followed him to the mound, and tossed three hitless innings of relief, before giving way to Grant Maus, who worked the final two scoreless frames and picked up the win.
The Blue Ribbons have an off day on Thursday, before hosting the Pulaski Reds at Joannes Stadium on Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:30 PM.
